IBM Domino Data Extraction and Archiving

Case Study Summary
A large client in the Healthcare industry was looking to meet regulatory and legal-discovery requirements for their enterprise applications and data. A significant amount of data existed in multiple IBM Domino applications that had been developed over many years, for many different business needs. Mercury was able to help by planning, piloting, and developing the analysis and extraction mechanisms in such a way so that production application usage and the surrounding network and infrastructure were not impacted. At the end of this process, the client was able to account for, and quickly search and retrieve this large body of data for their information governance requirements.

The Client
A large health products company with multiple global divisions and departments, which had leveraged IBM Domino for rapid application development and runtime reliability for many application needs.

The Challenge
Over time, the number of Domino applications grew to exceed several thousand. In parallel, the company’s regulatory and compliance needs further developed, which required that the application data be subject to policies around retention and discoverability. The challenge was how to apply this requirement to the vast number of Domino applications.

The Solution
Mercury assisted with a pilot utilizing a number of tools to assess data extraction capabilities vis-à-vis application characteristics, and develop a process that could be applied to the different applications, while not affecting the client’s production environment. With these capabilities, the different databases could be analyzed and handled in an appropriate way in order to extract and archive the necessary data.

The Results

  • An expeditious process utilizing analysis and several tools was developed that could be applied to the large number of databases
  • The client was able to complete this task for all of these databases and meet their regulatory and compliance needs
